Millions of people in Nigeria, one of the most endemic countries in Africa for lymphatic filariasis (also known as elephantiasis) and malaria, are suffering and dying from these mosquito-borne diseases. Lymphatic filariasis causes swelling of the extremities and permanent disability, while malaria can cause high fever, vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to anemia, kidney failure and even death. Children and pregnant women are the most susceptible. Medicine alone has not been sufficient to stop these diseases. But with a simple tool, DuraNet™ bed nets, which protect people while they sleep – we can help control these diseases and stop the suffering.
In 2010, Clarke approached The Carter Center with a shared vision: eradicate vector-borne disease in Nigeria. By spring 2011, the Clarke Cares Foundation launched an ambitious bed net replacement program, and by 2014, had shipped over 100,000 nets to Nigeria—protecting up to 180,000 people. This partnership, which combined long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets with drug treatment and health education, helped Nigeria’s Nasarawa and Plateau states successfully stop transmission of lymphatic filariasis by 2017.
The Clarke Cares Foundation’s Net for Net Project continues this vital work, providing WHO-recommended DuraNets to communities in Nigeria fighting malaria and lymphatic filariasis. Among the most durable mosquito nets available, DuraNets offer up to five years of continuous protection and are distributed with The Carter Center’s drug treatments and educational programs to maximize effectiveness.
