Biomist is Clarke’s proprietary brand of mosquito control products containing the active ingredient permethrin, one of the world’s most widely-used insecticides. The Biomist brand of adult mosquito control products have been registered with the US EPA for public health mosquito control applications since 1989. Biomist products come in various formulation options – including ready to use and concentrate products – that offer mosquito control programs flexibility for different application and flow rate requirements, application methods, species targets, and habitats.
The active ingredient in Biomist® is an IRAC Class 3A synthetic pyrethroid called permethrin. It emulates the naturally derived, botanical insecticides, known as pyrethrins, found in chrysanthemum flowers.
In all Biomist formulations, permethrin is combined with a synergist, piperonyl butoxide (PBO), to enhance its ability to provide fast knockdown and control of wild mosquito populations.
The EPA has evaluated Biomist and determined that using it according to label guidelines does not pose a significant risk to people or animals.
Mosquito control formulations containing permethrin break down quickly in the environment, and high temperatures and sunlight further accelerate this process.
Biomist is applied in a manner that limits deposition in the treatment area, and applications will not pose a risk to healthy aquatic habitats. However, direct exposure to this product does present risk to some aquatic organisms. Please refer to the product label for specific organisms of concern and for application instruction designed to mitigate non-target risks.
After a Biomist application, trace amounts of permethrin will bind to and remain in the soil, and will not transport further into plants, through the soil column, or become concentrated in the bodies of living things (bioaccumulation).
The EPA has evaluated Biomist and determined that using it according to label guidelines does not pose a significant risk to people or animals. Biomist has very low mammalian toxicity and has been found to be practically non-toxic to birds.
Because of the manner in which Biomist is applied and the time of day it is applied, treatments should not affect beneficial, pollinating insects, like bees and butterflies. Biomist is applied in small droplets, which break down quickly in the environment. Since the product must hit a mosquito while it is in flight to have an effect, it is sprayed at night when mosquitoes are actively flying and when other insects, such as bees and butterflies, are not active. Residues within a treatment area are not toxic. Per the product label, applicators should also take all necessary precautions to avoid applying the product when bees are active in the treatment area and prevent drift onto blooming crops or weeds.
Biomist formulations are labeled for mosquito control applications by ground or air over residential and recreational areas, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of customers and habitats, such as but not limited to parks and playgrounds, campsites, woodlands, athletic fields, golf courses, residential areas and other commercial areas. Biomist formulations may be applied over a specific list of growing crops and range grasses. See the product label for a complete list of crop tolerances and application rate guidance specific to each Biomist formulation.
All Biomist formulations are oil-based and require no excessive mixing, making it an applicator-friendly mosquito control product. The formulations are non-staining and non-corroding to your application systems, and have been optimized for performance through all standard ULV application equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Biomist®?
Biomist is a line of products for adult mosquito control in an Integrated Pest Management nuisance and public health mosquito management program. The Biomist brand of adulticides have been registered with the U.S. EPA since 1989 to help control adult mosquito populations that may transmit disease. What is the active ingredient in Biomist?
The Biomist product line is available in various formulation versions, with varying ratios of active ingredient (permethrin) and piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a chemical synergist that enhances the efficacy of permethrin against mosquito populations.
